Our Role in Advancing Student Success

Feb. 23, 2023

During the most recent 150 Forward town hall, I was reminded of the critical role each of our team members plays in advancing student success – no matter which unit you’re in. As Chancellor Charles Robinson said, “Everything you do today has an impact on tomorrow.

One example that Provost Terry Martin shared during the town hall was the power outage that happened during the early hours of the day. As a result of the outage, staff members in Facilities Management, Information Technology Services and other areas came in early (and stayed late, in some cases) to prepare our campus for a day of classes and activities for our students. It may have seemed trivial and/or inconvenient, but I’m certain that extra effort facilitated meaningful moments that contributed to students’ long-term success.

On a daily basis, our teams also create the environment and infrastructure that is conducive to student success. We construct and maintain every part of our campus for a clean and safe experience, provide transit services, manage bookstores and tech stores and protect our campus community from threats – both physical and digital. We assist students and the campus more broadly with financial needs, such as payroll, invoicing and student account processing. And we serve the faculty and staff members who invest so much time and energy into mentoring students.

In light of the town hall and all you do to advance student success, I just wanted to say thank you. Every one of you serves an important role at this institution and every one of you is an educator! Thank you for serving students so well today, for positioning them to succeed tomorrow, and for helping us build the next 150 years of our university’s future as well.

I also invite you to join our third and final scheduled 150 Forward town hall from 9 to 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 17 in the E.J. Ball Courtroom at the School of Law, or on YouTube. We’ll be discussing our strategic priority to enhance the university as an employer of choice. And I’d love to see and hear from you there.

Thank you, again, for all you do.
